Shamim Jawad Receives the Liberty

Washington, D.C. Shamim Jawad received the Liberty
Award by Dialogue on Diversity. The Award wad presented to her
by Rend al-Rahim, Ambassador of Iraq to the United States, in
a ceremony hosted at the Hall of Americas. Other awardees included
Leila Teresa Rachid Cowles, Paraguayan Minister of Foreign Affairs,
and Carina Perelli, Director of the United Nations Electoral
Assistance Division.
Dialogue on Diversity created the Liberty Award
in 2002 to recognize women who have effectively operated to
promote human rights and advocated social welfare for women
in perilous settings and post-conflict societies. In 2004 the
Liberty Award was granted to Ambassador Rend al-Rahim.
Shamim Jawad, the spouse of Ambassador of Afghanistan
to the United States, Said Tayeb Jawad, was selected to receive
the Liberty Award in recognition of her commitment to the Afghan
women and children. In her acceptance remarks, Shamim Jawad
said, "This award in fact recognizes the hardship, struggle
and achievements of the Afghan women, who suffered from three
decades of war and violence, but kept their hopes alive. I accept
this award with profound gratitude on behalf of courageous Afghan
and all other women who had never given up and always dreamed
of, and demanded a better future for themselves and humanity."
Dialogue on Diversity is a non-profit educational
organization, accredited by the United Nations and dedicated
to fostering creative interchange of concepts and experience
among business and professional women of all ethnic and national
communities.
