Statement by the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to the United States Eklil Hakimi on the 12th Anniversary of 9/11

September 11, 2013

WASHINGTON—On this day twelve years ago in New York City, Washington, and Pennsylvania, we witnessed the worst humanity had to offer when too many souls perished and too many lives were affected by evil acts of terrorism. On behalf of my fellow Afghans, my thoughts and prayers go out to the American people as we all honor and remember those lost and the friends and families they left behind.

Out of that sorrow, though, the world has come together over the last twelve years to fight and defeat those extremist forces. Today, al-Qaeda no longer enjoys sanctuary in Afghanistan, the Afghan-US partnership has never been closer, and the Government of Afghanistan stands on the cusp of the ‘Transformation Decade’ ready to extend the full breadth of its leadership and governance throughout the economic, security, and political transitions already underway.

A bond has been forever forged between the Afghan and American people through their mutual comprehension of the horrors of terrorism; this type of evil cannot endure. Peace and prosperity will prevail.

Let today’s reflection on the memory of those who passed away on September 11, 2001 once again renew our commitment to defeat terrorism and bring stability in the region. We must stand up for the enduring values that we share and cherish, as we advance freedom, prosperity and peace in my country of Afghanistan, the United States and around the world.

Eklil Hakimi
Afghan Ambassador to the United States
