Washington, D.C. - President Hamid Karzai won Afghanistan’s
first ever democratic election.
Visionary, skilful and national leader, President Karzai has
been working successfully to achieve the aspirations of the
Afghan people for security and national unity in partnership
with the international community.
Despite security challenges, threats of violence
by terrorists and freezing weather, more than 84% of the registered
voters—both men and women—enthusiastically formed
long queues at the polling stations to cast their ballots on
October 9. Afghans voted for peace and democracy and effectively
defeated terrorists and extremists.
Ambassador Said Tayeb Jawad applauded the historic
victory of President Karzai, congratulated the Afghan people
for their accomplishment, courage and determination and thanked
the international community for their support for the success
of Afghanistan’s first national elections.
Ambassador Jawad stated, “Every vote cast
in Afghanistan was a vote for global security, regional prosperity
and democracy in Afghanistan. We share this victory with, and
are sincerely grateful to, all of our friends and partners at
the international community, especially the United States of
America.”
The Ambassador of Afghanistan added that “now
that the President has received a strong mandate from the people
and the new government enjoys robust support, the new administration
is further burdened to meet the expectations of the people.
Afghans demand more security, better governance, efficient national
institutions and elimination of narcotics and corruption. President
Karzai is fully committed to deliver to the Afghan people, and
we can achieve these goals with the continued engagement and
accelerated support of the international community.”
In addition, Ambassador Jawad noted, “The
Afghan people have put their trust in the benefits of democracy
and international partnership. It is time for our partners to
strengthen their commitment to Afghanistan by supporting President
Karzai to deliver and meet the fair expectations of the Afghan
people.”
