Washington, D.C. - H.E. Said Tayeb Jawad, Ambassador of Afghanistan to the United States, is meeting with H.E. Vincente Fox Quesada, President of Mexico, today, August 18, 2004 to reestablish Afghanistan’s diplomatic relations with Mexico. Ambassador Jawad will present his credentials as non-resident Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Afghanistan to Mexico at the Office of the President in Mexico City.

Commenting on his visit to Mexico, Ambassador Jawad said, “I am privileged to convey the warm wishes of President Karzai and the people of Afghanistan to the President and people of Mexico at this crucial juncture of our history, as we embark to accelerate with the assistance of the international community the successful process of solidifying peace, democracy, and reconstruction in Afghanistan. Afghanistan offers tremendous investment opportunities and we look forward to Mexico’s assistance and investment helping rebuild Afghanistan.”

Ambassador Jawad is the first Afghan Ambassador to present his credentials to the President of Mexico after a 30-year gap in diplomatic relations between Afghanistan and Mexico due to years of war and the breakdown of state institutions in Afghanistan. The government of Afghanistan has striven hard over the past three years to restore its bilateral relations with foreign countries.
