Today President Hamid Karzai signed a law to prevent the financing of terrorism. This law, in addition to an anti-money laundering law passed last week, seeks to convince the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) not to blacklist Afghanistan’s banks.

The law was approved by the Meshrano Jirga, the upper house of parliament, on July 1, and by the Wolesi Jirga, the lower house of parliament, on June 30.

Afghanistan is serious about preventing financial crime, and hopes that this new legislation will improve regulation for Afghanistan’s banks and encourage international investment.
