Embassy Hosts Maryam Durani for Lunch
WASHINGTON, D.C (March 09, 2012) - Today the Embassy of Afghanistan hosted the Honorable Maryam Durani, Kandahar Provincial Council Member, for lunch.
Yesterday Ms. Durani was a recipient of the prestigious U.S. Secretary of State’s Award for International Women of Courage. The award recognizes women from around the globe who have demonstrated exceptional bravery and leadership while fighting for women's rights and empowerment.
Maryam Durani is a leading advocate of women’s rights in Kandahar Province. She is very active in her community and serves as a member of Kandahar’s Provincial Council and as director of the non-profit Khadija Kubra Women’s Association for Culture. She is also the owner and manager of the only local female-focused radio station. Despite challenges, Ms. Durani is undeterred in her mission to advance civil rights in Afghanistan.
Mrs. Sultana Hakimi, the Ambassador’s wife, and members of the diplomatic team joined Ms. Durani for lunch. After the lunch Ambassador Hakimi met with Ms. Durani to personally congratulate her on her accomplishments.
The Embassy of Afghanistan is honored to have hosted Maryam Durani for lunch. The Government of Afghanistan continues to support the efforts of Afghan women leaders like Ms. Durani.
