On December 18, 2011 Ambassador Eklil Hakimi visited the American University of Afghanistan in Kabul. Ambassador Hakimi toured the school's campus and visited its science labs, classrooms and gymnasium. He also met with students. He was very impressed by the university's academics, facilities, and motivated student body.

Ambassador Hakimi met with the university's president, Dr. C. Michael Smith. During their meeting they discussed the university's progress, growing student enrollment and the school's plans for two new construction projects that will begin in January 2012.

As an independent, non-sectarian, not-for-profit, co-educational university in Afghanistan, the American University of Afghanistan is a very important initiative for Afghanistan's educational system. In 2011 the student body enrollment reached 1,300.

Ambassador Hakimi said that, "We are grateful to have such a university in Afghanistan because it will give opportunity and access to Afghan students to receive the best education."
