NEW YORK—Representatives from the Embassy of Afghanistan in Washington, DC, attended The Rug Show at the Jarvis Convention Center in New York City from September 9–12. The Rug Show was a premier exhibition showcasing the latest releases in classic, contemporary, antique and one-of-a-kind award-winning designs from some of the leading producers and wholesalers of weavings. Among sixteen international rug exhibitors, Afghanistan’s fine carpets designs were showcased by Ariana Rugs and Ahmadi Company.

“Rugs from Afghanistan were sold the most at the show because of their uniqueness in quality and design,” said Shakib Noori, Commercial Attaché at the Embassy of Afghanistan. “Despite a drastic decline in exports in the recent years, carpet is still among Afghanistan‘s most important export item. Afghan carpets are internationally competitive, even with the challenges of a post-war economy.”

The Embassy of Afghanistan continues to promote the Afghanistan’s carpet sector by facilitating carpet exhibitions in the United States of America. With the assistance of the US Department of Commerce, the Embassy of Afghanistan has coordinated the attendance of a few Afghan carpet producers at the annual home-furnishing show in North Carolina from Oct. 13-17.

Furthermore, an Embassy of Afghanistan representative will attend the ‘Afghanistan USA Carpet Conference’ in Dubai, UAE, later this month. The Conference, planned for September 20-22, will bring 20 of the best Afghan carpet-making companies to meet with some of the top American rug importers and retailers. The conference is being organized by the U.S. Department of Commerce, Iraq & Afghanistan Investment & Reconstruction Task Force.
