President Karzai Orders Information Ministry to Take Action for the Release of Detained Afghan Journalists

Arg, Kabul – H.E. Hamid Karzai, President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan has instructed the Ministry of Information and Culture to follow up the detention and take action for the release of two Al-Jazeera cameramen and another reporter working for the state-run RTA TV in the province of Kapisa.

Reports indicate that two local cameramen working for Al-Jazeera television network were arrested this week by the NATO troops in the provinces of Kandahar and Ghazni. Separately in Kapisa province, a reporter of the local RTA TV was detained by the Afghan security forces.

President Karzai has ordered the Ministry to contact the relevant agencies and make every effort for the immediate release of the two cameramen and the reporter.

The President emphasizes that it remains committed to its support of the freedom of expression and media.
