President Karzai’s Message

Long-term US-Afghan Strategic Partnership Document to be Prepared in Three Months

October 04, 2010

Arg, Kabul – President Hamid Karzai and President Barack Obama spoke on Monday evening via video conference. The two leaders discussed a number of issues of mutual interest including the strategic vision for long term U.S.-Afghan relations, the recent parliamentary elections as well as matters of regional importance.

Also joined by Foreign Minister Dr. Rasoul and Chief of Staff, the two Presidents recounted the progress and challenges and agreed that the working groups from both the countries should prepare by the end of the current year (2010) the document on long term strategic partnership and to align efforts to support President Karzai’s goal of completing transition to Afghan-led security responsibilities by 2014.

The two leaders also agreed that the results of the work by the joint working groups on the strategic partnership document be concluded on the sideline of the NATO Summit in Lisbon in November.

The two Presidents once again urged that long term strategic partnership between the two countries benefits the people of Afghanistan and the United States.
