Ambassador Jawad Welcomes New Congressional Leadership
Following the election of the 110th United States Congress, Ambassador Jawad reached out to the new Congressional leadership in a number of welcome letters. The Ambassador congratulated Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Congressman Gary L. Ackerman (Chair of International Relations Committee, Subcommittee on Middle East and Central Asia), Congressman John. P. Murtha (Chair of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense), Congresswoman Nita M. Lowey (Chair of the Appropriations Sub-Committee on Foreign Operations), Congressman Silvestre Reyes (Chair of House Intelligence Committee), and Congressman Ike Skelton (Chair of the House Armed Services Committee) on the behalf of the Government and people of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. The Ambassador expressed his appreciation for their past contributions to the rebuilding effort in Afghanistan and emphasized the history of bi-partisan support for Afghanistan’s security and development needs.
Ambassador Jawad stressed that while Afghans today enjoy more political, economic and social rights that at any time in the history of their country, the Afghan people continue to face serious challenges in need of immediate and strong attention. He listed strengthening Afghanistan’s national institutions, enhancing Afghan government’s capacity to deliver services to the people, and fighting terrorism through both military and non-military means as key challenges. “We look forward to working closely with your office and members of the US Congress to address key issues related to US-Afghan issues and the ongoing rebuilding effort in our country,” he wrote.
