Foreign Minister Spanta Travels to Turkmenistan
Foreign Minister Dr. Rangin Dadfar Spanta traveled to Turkmenistan to celebrate the opening of the UN Regional Center of Preventative Diplomacy in Asgabat.
The Center is tasked with assisting the Governments of Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan in building capacities to peacefully prevent conflict, in facilitating dialogue, and in catalyzing international support behind projects and initiatives. The Center is expected to work closely with existing UN agencies and programmes operating in Central Asia, and also regional groups such as the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
The Foreign Minister met with Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow to discuss the progress of the implementation of the bilateral accords signed recently in Asgabat.
“We touched upon bilateral relations and Afghan-Turkmen partnership, the issue of electricity supplies, the construction of a railway and gas pipeline and other issues,” said Dr. Spanta.
