Girls Enjoy Football in Kabul
The first-ever Kabul Girls Football (soccer) competition ended with high spirits as UN Deputy Special Representative for Afghanistan Ameerah Haq presented a trophy to the winners –celebrating both a victory and a milestone event for young women in Kabul. “Sports provide children of all ages, boys and girls, with opportunities to express themselves, to contribute their opinions, and to become agents for change,” Haq said Kabul currently has 15 girl’s football teams, with players ranging in age from of 13 to 20. The participants of the competition each received footballs made for the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) by disabled Afghans and partially subsidized through staff donations. Over 1,000 footballs will also be delivered to schools across Afghanistan.
