President Karzai Meets New British Foreign Secretary

President Hamid Karzai met with Britain’s Foreign Secretary David Miliband, of Britain, at the Gulkhana Palace on July 24.

During the meeting, bilateral relations, the situation in Afghanistan and the region, the fight against terrorism, the role of Britain in reconstruction and strengthening of security and the fight against terrorism and narcotics were discussed in detail.

Foreign Secretary Miliband expressed the Queen of England's condolences to President Karzai and members of the family of His Majesty Father of the Nation Mohammad Zahir Shah.

Britain's new Foreign Secretary assured President Hamid Karzai of the continuation of his country's assistance to the people of Afghanistan and said, "I had made a commitment that my first visit outside of Europe should be to Afghanistan and this visit shows that I have fulfilled my commitment," he said.    

Foreign Secretary Miliband welcomed the holding of regional peace jirga between Afghanistan and Pakistan and said, "It will play a crucial role in strengthening security in the region."

President Karzai thanked Foreign Secretary David for his participation in the burial ceremony of His Majesty Father of the Nation and also expressed his gratitude for Britain's assistance to Afghanistan's security and reconstruction.
