Afghanistan’s Parliament Joins the Inter-Parliamentary Union

On May 5, Afghanistan became the 149th member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

A 16-member delegation of Afghan parliamentarians attended the 116th assembly held in Jakarta, Indonesia. Meshrano Jirga Chairman Hazrat Sibghatullah Mujaddedi delivered remarks. Parliamentarian Qaderia Ibrahim Yazdan Parast noted that admission to the IPU would allow Afghan parliamentarians the chance to learn from the experiences of other parliaments; such contacts will empower them to make useful decisions on issues of public interest.

The IPU is the focal point for world-wide parliamentary dialogue and works for peace and co-operation among peoples and for the establishment of representative democracy.

The IPU fosters contacts, co-ordination, and the exchange of experience among parliaments and parliamentarians of all countries and contributes to the defense and promotion of human rights.
