Afghanistan Launches Major Fiber Optics Project

The Afghan Ministry of Communications has announced the start of a major 3,300 km fiber optics project costing $ 61 million. The communications project will connect Kabul with 16 provinces in the eastern, northern and southern provinces. The launch of this large-scale development project will provide jobs for approximately 10,000 Afghans.

Spokesman for Ministry of Communication Mr. Hadi Hadi announced that the plan will connect Afghanistan with Iran, Pakistan and some other countries in Central Asia by land. Currently, the communications system in Afghanistan works via satellite; the fiber optics project will improve the quality of communications and make domestic and international communications more cost effective.

The Ministry of Communications is also working to provide 80% of Afghans with communication services by the end of the year, including rural villages in remote provinces. This year will see the launch of 1,500 digital telephones in five main provinces of Afghanistan. Currently, 2.5m people have access to mobile and digital phones.
