President Karzai Condemns the Killing of Ajmal Naqshbandi

President Hamid Karzai strongly condemned the killing of Ajmal Naqshbandi by the enemies of Afghanistan.

The enemies of Afghanistan martyred Ajmal Naqshbandi yesterday afternoon after kidnapping him one month ago.The Taliban kidnapped an Italian journalist along with his driver and Ajmal Naqshbandi in the Nad Ali district of Helmand province one month ago. They beheaded the driver on the second day of his captivity and demanded the release of a number of their prisoners.

The Afghan Government looked into their demands and decided to release five of their prisoners, but in return the Taliban only released the Italian journalist and held Ajmal Naqshbandi in captivity.

The Government did its utmost to secure the release of Ajmal Naqshbandi, but the Taliban did not have a specific demand and they brutally killed him prior to the expiry of their deadline.

In his reaction to the death of Ajmal Naqshbandi, the President said, “This heinous act of terrorism is against humanity and Islam. The release of a foreigner and beheading of two Afghans by the Taliban shows that the Taliban, at the instruction of foreigners, are trying to kill innocent Afghans and destroy our country.”

The Taliban had set the deadline for the release of Ajmal Naqshbandi 03:00 PM Monday, but they brutally killed him on Sunday as the Government was trying to secure his release

The President expressed his heartfelt sympathies and condolences to his family and to all Afghan journalists.
