Afghanistan Now Exporting Gourmet Vegetables

USAID reported that Afghan agriculture traders are now preparing 30,000-kilogram shipments of red onions biweekly to Dubai-based airline caterers and will begin sending shipments of high-value gourmet vegetables such as romanesco, baby carrots, radicchio, and Boston lettuce among others to Dubai wholesalers.

In an effort to provide Afghan farmers with economic alternatives to poppy production, USAID provides high-value vegetable and fruit seed, technical assistance to increase productivity, and established collective marketing mechanisms and strong linkages with overseas markets.

In addition, Afghan farmers will soon benefit from an education initiative from U.S. food and agribusiness giant, Dole Foods, Inc.  USAID is partnering with Dole on a project that will aim to aid agricultural development by providing technical assistance, project management and marketing support to approximately 2,000 hectares of land employing about 25,000 Afghan workers.  David Murdock, CEO of Dole, is scheduled to announce the partnership in early April at a major USAID agriculture trade fair.
