The Embassy of Afghanistan Condemns Kabul Serena Hotel Terrorist Attack

The Embassy of Afghanistan in Washington, D.C. strongly condemns the January 14 terrorist attack on the Kabul Serena Hotel.

Shortly after 6:00 p.m. on Monday, January 14, three men wearing suicide vests attempted to enter the Kabul Serena Hotel. Two terrorists detonated their bombs after Afghan guards prevented them from entering the hotel. The remaining terrorist fired indiscriminately at Hotel guards, employees and guests, before attempting to change his appearance and escape. He was captured and detained by Afghan and international security forces before he could leave the area. Following the assault, three additional suspected accomplices who provided logistical support for the attack were arrested. At least seven people have died from wounds sustained during the assault.

The Government of Afghanistan regrets this tragic loss of life and wishes to express its condolences to the families of the victims; it will make every effort to ensure the safety of the international workers whose courageous service is vital to Afghanistan’s successful reconstruction. This unconscionable attempt to undermine the confidence of the international community will only strengthen our united resolve to ensure a secure, prosperous and democratic Afghanistan.
