Statement on May 29 Traffic Accident
Ministry of Foreign Affairs

05/30/2006

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan expresses its profound regret over the death and injury of a number of Afghan citizens in the traffic accident in Kabul on Monday 29th May, 2006, and extends its condolences to the families of the deceased. The Ministry also strongly condemns attacks against the properties of individual and corporate entities.

While viewing the ensuing disturbances as unacceptable, the Ministry reassures the international community that such occurrences do not represent the view of the vast majority of Afghan people or the direction of the socio-political developments in Afghanistan. Reconstruction of the country remains the most important objective of the people and the government of Afghanistan.

Afghanistan views the sustained commitment of the international community as vital in helping her overcome the legacy of decades of wars and conflicts. The Ministry is confident that events such as yesterday’s—which are common features of many societies, in particular the post-conflict nations—will not affect the will and efforts of Afghanistan’s international partners. On behalf of the Government of Afghanistan, the Ministry reiterates its obligation to ensure the safety and well-being of all members of the international community who are currently in Afghanistan.
