Ambassador Jawad Visits Portland, Maine
Embassy of Afghanistan

Washington, D.C. - Said Tayeb Jawad, Ambassador of Afghanistan to the United States, is visiting the city of Portland in Maine where he will speak on “State-Building in Afghanistan: Achievements and Challenges” at the Third Annual Seminar Bernstein Forum for International Understanding hosted by the World Affairs Council of Maine at University of Southern Maine on June 13.

Ambassador Jawad appreciated the opportunity to speak to the people of Maine about Afghanistan’s reconstruction progress and the importance of the US-Afghanistan Strategic Partnership to the success of the state-building process in Afghanistan. He said: “The United States-Afghanistan Strategic Partnership will encourage the advancement of freedom and democracy in the wider region, and supports Afghanistan’s initiative to restore the country’s historic role as a land bridge connecting Central and South Asia. It will help shift the pattern of regional relations from rivalry to economic and political cooperation for regional stability and prosperity. The Partnership is not against a third country, but it deters meddling in the internal affairs of Afghanistan.”

On May 23 during his landmark visit to the United States, President Hamid Karzai and President George W. Bush signed the historic Joint Declaration of the United States-Afghanistan Strategic Partnership. By signing the joint declaration, the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to bilateral cooperation to fight terrorism and narcotics, consolidate democracy in Afghanistan through institutional building and economic development, and enabling Afghanistan to stand on its own feet for the long-haul.
