Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel
(R-NE) introduced a resolution on October 6 commending the people
of Afghanistan for holding landmark Presidential elections this
Saturday, October 9, 2004. Cosponsored by the ranking members
of the US Senate, an excerpt from “Resolution on Afghanistan’s
Elections” states, “The Government and people of
Afghanistan deserve our praise and recognition for their achievements.
The process leading to this historic election has not always
been easy. But the government of President Karzai and the people
of Afghanistan have not been deterred. More than 10.5 million
Afghan citizens have been reported registered to vote, reflecting
the courage and commitment of Afghans to a democratic future.”
Introducing the resolution, Senator Hagel pointed
out that the United States is committed to the long-term reconstruction
of Afghanistan, as well as regional peace and security. He reiterated
President George Bush’s commitment that “the world
and the United States stand with the people of Afghanistan as
partners in their quest for peace and prosperity and stability
and democracy.”
The Embassy of Afghanistan welcomes this timely
resolution and the continued support of Senator Hagel (R-NE)
and the cosponsors of the resolution, Senator Richard Lugar
(R-IN), Senator Joseph Biden (D-DE), Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT),
Senator John McCain (R-AZ), Senator John Sununu (R-NH) and Senator
Chris Dodd (D-CT).
Ambassador Said Tayeb Jawad stated, “Senator
Hagel has been a strong and consistent supporter of the Afghan
people. This resolution is one among many contributions Senator
Hagel has made to the rebuilding of Afghanistan. We appreciate
it.” Ambassador Jawad also applauded the broad support
of the US Senate extended to Afghanistan and welcomed their
recognition of the achievements of the Afghan people and government
of President Karzai. He noted that “the elections in Afghanistan
are a significant shared accomplishment by the Afghan people,
the United States, and our international partners in the war
against terrorism. The overwhelming voter turnout expected this
Saturday signifies the success of the international partnership
with us and the determination of the Afghan people to elect
a democratic government and build a strong civil society in
Afghanistan.”
