Ms. Hawa Ghaus

Legal Counsel

Hawa Ghaus is the Legal Counsel at the Embassy of Afghanistan in Washington, D.C. She provides legislative and legal analysis, executes broad-based public advocacy efforts to assist in Afghanistan’s development process, and acts as the Embassy’s liaison with the U.S. Congress. She also works on various women’s issues for the Embassy.

Ms. Ghaus holds a law degree from the UCLA School of Law and a bachelor of arts degree, magna cum laude, in Political Science and Sociology from UCLA. Prior to joining the Embassy, she was the Frankel Fellow at Human Rights First in New York, Co-Editor-in-Chief of the UCLA Journal of Islamic and Near Eastern Law (JINEL), and President of the UCLA International Law Society. She was also a trainer and law clerk for the El Centro Legal Asylum Clinic and at El Rescate where she worked on gender-based persecution and imputed political opinion cases. Ms. Ghaus is a licensed mediator and works as a volunteer for the Afghanistan Relief Organization (ARO). Prior to law school, she was an Ethnographer for the National Science Foundation (NSF) and an intern for the Mexican-American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF). She is fluent in English and Dari.
