Foreign Minister Spanta Travels to Uzbekistan


Foreign Minister Dr. Rangin Dadfar Spanta met his Uzbek counterpart Foreign Minister Vladimir Norov to strengthen cooperation between Afghanistan and Uzbekistan. Minister Spanta reiterated Afghanistan’s gratitude for the role the Uzbekistan government has played in Afghanistan’s reconstruction process. The two Foreign Ministers signed a memorandum of understanding on December 1 to commit to strengthening bi-lateral relations and establish a mechanism for regular consultations on regional security issues. Both Foreign Ministers pledged to fight terrorism, drug trafficking and transnational crime. They expressed each government’s mutual interest in the continued expansion of transportation and trade relations between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan.


Minister Spanta also met with Uzbekistan’s Deputy Prime Minister in Energy Affairs and Minister of Economy Shah Esmatov to discuss Uzbekistan’s cooperation and investment in the reconstruction process of Afghanistan. Minister Spanta visited the historic Silk Road cities of Samarkand and Bukhara before returning to Afghanistan.
