US Bipartisan Support for Doubling Reconstruction Efforts

President Karzai arrived in Washington on September 24 for a four-day visit, following his official trip to Canada. He met with senior US Administration officials including Vice President Richard Cheney, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. The President also met with the Senate and House leadership, and Senators Chuck Hagel, Jack Reed, Richard Lugar, Joseph Biden and Hillary Clinton. In these meetings, the President thanked the United States for its continued assistance towards Afghanistan’s reconstruction over the past five years, and discussed Afghanistan’s numerous state-building achievements, including the country’s new constitution and the presidential and parliamentary elections. US officials agreed with President Karzai that a doubling of efforts was needed to consolidate Afghanistan’s accomplishments in security, governance, and development.
