'In Afghanistan' Highlights Partnership between Netherlands and Afghanistan

Ambassador Said T. Jawad and Dutch Ambassador Renee Jones-Bos came together to highlight the partnership between the Netherlands and Afghanistan at a reception for the opening of the 'In Afghanistan' photo exhibit on Wednesday, September 17. The exhibit, which features over 50 photographs taken by Dutch photgrapher Hans Stakelbeek, focuses on the human face of Afghanistan's reconstruction.

In remarks, Ambassador Jawad recognized the important role the Netherlands plays in Afghanistan. "In our struggle to create a prosperous and peaceful Afghanistan, the Netherlands has been a very generous friend and trusted partner," he stated. "Close to 2,000 Dutch troops work in one of the most difficult and deprived provinces, Uruzgan, as well as in the cities of Kabul and Kandahar, where they fight terrorists and build up Afghanistan’s civil society at the same time."

Ambassador Jawad also thanked the Netherlands for funding vital development projects. "The Dutch PRTs have built health clinics, schools, roads and water systems, implemented crop-substitution programs, and undertaken conflict resolution initiatives with community leaders. They work with villagers and interact with people. It is not unusual to hear from children in Uruzgan saying 'Alles Gut,'" he noted, referring to the Dutch phrase for "All is well."

Ambassador Jones-Bos stressed that the Dutch role in Afghanistan was centered on both security and stability, on fighting terrorists and promoting development. Only with a comprehensive approach, she argued, could Afghanistan lay the foundations for a future of peace and prosperity.

The exhibit is open through October 4 at the Touchstone Gallery (406 Seventh Street, NW, Second Floor) in Washington, D.C. For more information on the exhibit, please click here.
