Mr. Martin Austermuhle
Director of Media Relations
Mr. Martin Austermuhle has served at the Embassy of Afghanistan since April 2008. Mr. Austermuhle is responsible for the Embassy of Afghanistan’s day-to-day engagement with print, broadcast, and online media. His duties include assisting the Embassy’s Political Department with public affairs strategy, monitoring media coverage and initiating responses when necessary, coordinating media engagements for the Ambassador and visiting Government of Afghanistan officials, and drafting speeches, press releases and other external communications.
Mr. Austermuhle holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Politics from Penn State University and a Master of Arts in Latin American Studies from Georgetown University. While at Georgetown, he also completed a certificate program in refugees and humanitarian emergencies through the Institute for the Study of International Migration. Prior to joining the Embassy of Afghanistan, Mr. Austermuhle worked at the Embassy of Venezuela and interned at Human Rights Watch, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, and The Nation.
Born in Switzerland to a Swiss-Dutch family, Mr. Austermuhle has lived in Colombia, Mexico, Venezuela, and Costa Rica.
