US Will not Repeat the Mistake of Turning its Back on Afghanistan

03 September 2010 - US Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates emphasized that the US learned a lesson in turning its back on Afghanistan in 1989, and said they had no intention of doing so again.Talking to reporters following a meeting with H.E. President Hamid Karzai Secretary Gates said the US would stay in Afghanistan after July 2011, when the gradual and conditions-based withdrawal of US troops would begin.
